Foolishness
Have you ever seen the video clip of "Fight Like A Brave" of "The Uplift Mofo Party Plan?" Among all clips RHCP made, i think i prefer that one best.
It's fun video which Anthony preaches to square politicians at the assembly commitee, or they dance with Indians... i like this because i think i can see the 'natural' faces of them in that and see the friendly atomosphere of them at that time.
Hardly can we see these days, but early RHCP had surely "foolish" image and that's the most point where i began to love them. For instance ex. drummer Jack Irons. i loved his character too. Just pretending the tipical "vacant white man" (of course it's not true though). i remember a TV program which i saw in a bootleg video. In that program he wore a toy which shape is like elephant's nose on his face and was keeping on shaking that nose continuously behind other members during they were interviewed. That made me laugh to death. i really miss his character. it's shame he left the band.
This is in another bootleg video, the German TV program they showed, they were interviewed. While Hillel was answering the question he seemed to become exited, he started to hit the table with his fist "bang! bang!..." making a rousing speech mimicking the German intonation. Then, other members started to hit the table all together. "bang! bang! bang!..." i love this kind of aspects of the band.
When they perform such "fool" characters, there always seem to be the criticism to themselves. Their criticism to "white superior ideology," their respect to Native Americans...taking these into consideration, i think there was a kind of effect which is the confession of self-hatred with themselves by performing "fool" white people. They often got naked, but white people's ass is not as beautiful as black people's one definitely. When they get naked on stage and show their white ass, they try to put that into the form of an "abnormal freak show," it should be considered as the expression of their self-hatred which is so bizarre and complex.
But when we stand on the point of another view, this kind of expression of self-hatred might be their "strategy" which has been carefully calculated. And that strategy was very strong and smart one. "Foolishness" could be considered as one of their "armaments" which early RHCP did(or had to do) in many way.
