Funk, Freak

Being funky, which is the expression of the feeling that i call "funkiness" is the most important theme for RHCP of course. That has been true from their debut to present, basically. For them, funk is not limited to only a form of music. It is almost their way of lives, as sung in the tune "Funky Crime" of "The Uplift Mofo Party Plan." By the way, there appears a character who i call "God Monster of Funk" in "Funky Crime." In the beggining of the song, he says "Do it!" through the phone line. He also appears in "Nobody Weird Like Me" of "Mother's Milk," and in the demo version of "Green Heaven." And he changes his figure to the character named "Sir Psycho Sexy" in "Blood Sugar Sex Magik." This character who often appears in their world of lyrics, the "God Monster of Funk," what kind of existence is he for RHCP?

Though once African-American member joined for a short time, RHCP has been "white" people's band generally. It might be harder than we imagine for them as white people to play funk music which is originally a black people's one. The core black music fan might think "That's not funk," in other hand, their music ain't "normal" white people's eight-beat rock obviously. It can be said they were in the "grey zone" and their fights to acquire the true funkiness must be very difficult and be full of pain, to be sure. Any rock band can play "funk" as just one form of music, but what RHCP was seeking for in funk was not just the surface level thang, It must be the extraordinary power which almost blows the existance of themselves. To acquire the funkiness, like i say in the review of "The Uplift Mofo Party Plan," they needed to sell their bodies, their souls to the "God Monster of Funk" who i told before. They, as white rock musician, couldn't be "funky" in the true meaning without doing such a thing.

The "God" of funk is different from normal religion's one. He's a "freak" and the master of the world of immorality, insanity. But like they sing in "Sir Psycho Sexy," they truly love that freak. "He's a Freak of Nature but we love him so. He's a Freak of Nature but we let him go." And their ultimate wish is to be freaks by the guide of "God Monster of Funk." "I pray the Funk will make me freak." Tattoos covering all their bodies are considered as the image of the transfiguration of their bodies to freaks.

i'd like to turn my eyes to the relation of rock and freak. i think rock music is essentially a "Side Show." Yes, like that we can see in the movie "Freaks." i think rock is the moment which performer as the "abnormal" existance show us who are living our daily lives busily, the "other" world. That aspect of rock especially grabs my heart. Which i expect with the word 'rock' is that kind of freaky element. i remember the sentence written on the front grass of a car in the movie "Twin Peaks," that said "Let's Rock." That is similar nuance, i think.

The "as-large-as-life" musicians wearing T-shirt and jeans, they are not so bad. But, i still think ROCK musician must have the freaky part which "normal" people can't even understand. i think RHCP is prominent among any rock bands in the world in terms of 'how freaky'.
