Performances
RHCP and showy, freaky performances always go together. In early, "socks on cocks" which just wearing socks on their penises, the "electric bulb head" in the '94 Woodstock...etc, and they always make funny faces and odd posing when they are taken photographs. They became rather serious since "BSSM" though, and hardly do they do showy performances(but remember the naked performance of FLEA in Woodstock '99! Still RHCP ain't normal band. However, i wanted all members to do that).
Normally the band which has real ability hardly do such things. Because the band tends to be easily attached a label as "comical" band by doing such performances. And there is a danger that could be underestimated even they are doing "decent" music. Actually, RHCP is still considered as "abnormal" band, and nevertheless they were keeping high level musicianship from the beginning of their carrier, some music press seemed to take no notice of their music seriously for a long time till these days.
But, this band dared to do such performances which brought many risks to them, and this attitude seems to never change now basically. Then, you might think "How come they bothered to do such things?" But i'd like to ask you oppositely "How come you are satisfied with bands or artists who even doesn't do performance at all?"
The images often found in some sort of rock musicians, such as "sincerity of the attitude," "unaffected attitude"... When these kinds of images are transmitted through the media, i think there always be some suspicious feelings following. Conversely, i feel i can trust the bands or artists who do foolish performances.
Rock has an aspect which is freaky and crazy by nature, and it's the moment which performer shows us, being prisoners locked up in "everyday cage," "the other side" of the world a little bit, and i think that is the most pleasure of rock.
So, i don't take the performances which RHCP is doing as "comical." Taking the fact rock has "comical" elements by nature into consideration, what RHCP is doing is still one of the expressions of "orthodox" rock artists. And i take a series of performances RHCP do as one aspect of their expressions of "funkiness(= being truly funky)."
