Gong Li(CAL session)
RHCP has some "masterpieces which were not included in albums." This tendency seemed to go up since "BSSM," there are some tunes that they recorded during the session but not included intentionally. The most representative one is "Soul to Squeeze"(BSSM). This song is really great to the extent that this must have been the "key" tune in the album "BSSM" if included. Why didn't the band and the producer put these into albums? Of course they must have something in their mind, so i don't mean to complain about that here. But as a fan, it's quite hard to follow all singles being released along the album. You might miss the great masterpieces if you are absent-minded. Just like i missed the tune, "Gong Li."
Although i bought the album "Californication," i didn't buy the singles being cut from that album, so at the first time i didn't listen to these tunes coupled with singles such as, "How Strong," "Instrumental #1,#2." though i only knew the fact they exist. When i came to listen to these after a year and more, i hardly regretted myself not buying the singles. This tune "Gong Li," is such a great one which is a match for "Soul to Squeeze" i told above. Oh, my!
The song starts with a impressive part which is composed of rhythm machine, guitar and bass. What do you say...the "irregular time?" very experimental and (rather)odd phrase is repeated. And suddenly the main phrase starts with Anthony's voice, this main phrase is really "weeping" melody. it seems there is no other song which reveals straightly their innocence like this. When its melody is "innocent" to this extent, the tune has a possibility to fall into the state that is too much "melodramatic." But the "irregular time" part which i told above seems to make this song itself exquisitely well-balanced.
The world of lyrics of Anthony can be said to stay high level. The words used in this song are pretty easy and the whole lyrics are easy in terms of grammar, too. But you never know what they mean easily. It can be said that it depends on each listener how to comprehend this song. The world of song is really broad.
This tune penetrated my mind straightly. i fell in love with it in a flash(of course every fan must have each own taste, i know) . If this tune had been included in the album "CAL," the character of that album could be defferent far from that. Personally, i prefer this song to the ballads included in "CAL," indeed. Anyway, i hope the band, from the bottom of my heart, to make and play this kind of mellow, weeping song. i ain't expect that always, but at least occasionally, i hope.
