Trying to recover the failure in the former album, they got George Clinton, the "the commander-in-chief" of P-Funk family and created this second original album.

Unfortunately, it seemes this album also has a problem in terms of the sound production. General impression of the sounds are somehow blur and especially the most disadvantage point is the sound of guitars. We hear the "New Wave" wise flimsy guitar sound here again. There is no sense of hardness which has some punch.

If i explain the sound of early RHCP by force, it would be "the fusion of punk and funk." George Clinton is a superior producer of funk music, but it is hard to say he correctly grasped the charms of RHCP at that time and succeeded to draw their punky and crazy elements. Especially the "fast" songs like "Blackeyed Blonde," "Catholic School Girls Rule," "Sex Rap" seem not to have a power so much. i don't feel these songs were produced to the best advantages.

In other hand, like the great producer of P-Funk that he is, the grooveness that has been embodied in this album is pretty cool, especially i'd like to point "American Ghost Dance," "Hollywood(Africa)," "Yertle The Turtle." Generally he succeeded to create the coolness that black music had originally. i think "P-Funk taste" horns go well with band's sounds.

The tunes themselves are not bad. "Nevermind," that used to be played at the last of the show(except for an encore...by the way, the opening song used to be "Out In L.A." and this opening&last format had been kept for a long time...till "BSSM" tour... i think,) "Hollywood(Africa)" that used to be played at the show often, "Blackeyed Blonde" that was played at the Japan tour of 2000...they are pretty great. All the more it was regretful for RHCP that the sound production was not so good.

However, this could be also said to the former one, though i can be critical from now, in 1985 that this piece has been released, there is no band or artist all over the world that has a musicianship like RHCP. It might be i should make an allowance for the producer.

Take a look at the artists they named that should be beaten by them in the 'Nevermind' of this album. Duran Duran, Men At Work, Hall and Oates, George Michael...the youth might not even know their names. The dignitaries that conquered the major music scene in the early 80's. Looking back now, it is hard to understand why they bothered to select these "easy-to-understand" rock artists to fight for, but the rock music scene at that time were so conservative and these kind of soft music ruled. The 'alternative' music that we say now, didn't almost exist.

Really it was a tragedy caused because their musicianship was too early, anyway, they must wait till next "The Uplift Mofo Party Plan" to reveal the most of their characteristics.
